S-Trip! Destination: Yucatan Explorer, Cancun, Mexico
This July, our Grad Trip students had the opportunity to visit Cancun ProKids to learn about the difficulties that many of the children who stay here have experienced. In past visits our travelers have worked alongside the children to create a garden contributing to the daily meals served at the shelter. This summer, we helped to maintain and harvest these gardens, repainted the dormitories, and the children taught us how to do origami! In addition to all of this, we also received a tour of the space, which taught us about how Cancun ProKids came to be, and the community that they serve. After all the activities and the tour, everyone came back together as one large group to end the day with a few games of soccer, tag and even a couple games of chess.
Cancun ProKids is a beautiful and welcoming space that provides a safe home to nearly 100 children who have faced abuse and exploitation. In addition to a place to call home, Cancun ProKids offers education, recreational activties, skills training, basic health care and legal support. Since opening in 1993, the centre continues to be self-sustaining, entirely run locals who volunteer their time and energy. They are committed to the children who enter their program, assisting them with psychological care and legal advice for any cases that the children may be pursuing. Cancun ProKids understands the importance of creating sustainable opportunities in these children’s lives, preparing them for life far beyond their time in the centre.
We are proud to partner with such a well-rounded program and their caring staff. Learn more at www.cancunprokids.com.
