S-Trip! Destination: Cayos of Cuba, Cayo Coco, Cuba
March Break 2016
During the March 2016 program we had the privilege to join forces with an incredible new school called Angel Gutierrez. This school is located just 1 hour away from Cayo Coco, in a small town called El Tuero, Ciego de Avila. This town has nearly 1000 residents, made up primarily of family farmers.
Angel Gutierrez is the only school in this town and it was built over 24 years ago. The school has 24 students ranging from kindergarten up to fourth grade. The students at Angel Gutierrez welcomed us every single day with traditional Cuban music, poems and performances.
Along with a cultural exchange, and time to play games with the students, the S-Trip travelers also had the chance to volunteer their time to help restore this school by rehabilitating the garden, and replacing some of the school’s windows and doors. The school had eight huge windows that were far below standards. On one side, the windows were made out of cement, providing no relief from the elements, and every time it rained the classrooms and their contents would get damaged. The wooden windows were visibly broken, and in need of great repair. The windows were a main priority for this school, and because of the collaboration with S-Trip, we were able to check one more thing off the school's list! We thank our S-Trip students who got involved in this project and the community contractor who guided them through it.
After a successful program in March 2016, our next project with Angel Gutierrez is to change the remaining windows and doors, and restore the sides of the windows, by re-cementing and painting the walls. We are super excited for the Summer program to get started oh so soon! Don’t forget to sign-up for your Get REAL Volunteer Experience to make a positive impact while you travel!
