S-Trip! Destination: Cayos of Cuba, Cayo Coco, Cuba
Once again this summer we were invited into the community of La Rosa for many wonderful days of cultural exchange and volunteering. Familiar to us, and very dear to our hearts, we were very happy to be back to share even more memories and opportunities. La Rosa welcomed us with traditional Cuban poetry, dances, songs and the crowd favourite - a fashion show. With our smiles bigger than ever, we cheered these brave little girls as they showed us their fierceness and confidence.
After the welcome ceremony each day, we split into three groups and rotated within them. The first stop was playing activities with the local students, where the students made unforgettable relationships, memories and got their butts kicked at limbo. The second station consisted of a community tour, an opportunity to learn about life outside of the resort. Through an eye-opening, inspiring, and educational walk, we got a small glimpse into authentic Cuban life. At the final station, the Canadian and Cuban students came together as one community to build a new classroom that will serve as a learning and play area for kindergarten students!
Each day we came closer and closer to completing the project - mixing the cement, laying bricks, plastering the walls, installing windows and doors, and finally the finishing touch of a fresh coat of paint! On our final visit, La Rosa had a little surprise for us. Blue, white and yellow paint! As a way to say thank you to all of the students who visited La Rosa during their Grad Trip, the school administration chose to use the S-Trip! colours for their new classroom. As we worked alongside the students, teachers and community members of La Rosa, it was evident that the addition of a small classroom will be highly regarded and enjoyed by students for many years to come!
