S-Trip! Destination: Cayos of Cuba, Cayo Coco, Cuba
Site Visit, January 2017
In early January, our head office staff spent some time in each of our Cuban destinations to prepare for our March Break programs. While we were in Cayo Coco, we made sure to visit both of the schools that our passengers have worked at over the last few seasons. First, we stopped by Escuela Rural Julio Antonio Mella Mac Partland y Diez in the small community of La Rosa. The preschool teacher was happy to show us around, especially because its her school room that was painted in S-Trip! colours this past summer!
This coming March, travelers volunteering in La Rosa will help set up a new chainlink fence around the school property, because the current barbed wire fence is unsafe for the young schoolchildren. They will also expand the school's small garden, which the teachers use as a great learning tool, and support the contractor that will be installing a new roof for the grade 5/6 school room!
After saying 'hasta luego' to our friends in La Rosa, we drove to El Tuero to visit Escuela Primaria Angel Gutierrez. With about 30 students, it is the only school in the community, as the older students go into Moron for their classes. Our travelers have made progress at this school over the last few seasons, by replacing the rotting wooden windows with new metal ones. Our priority this March is to update more of the windows in the preschool room, and clean up the backyard area to prepare for a new play space and community garden!
Maybe our travelers will even get to learn the Spanish song that goes with the game the children were playing on their recess! If you're traveling to the Cayos of Cuba, get ready for an amazing and heartwarming Volunteer Experience!
